How did WW1 impact returning soldiers?
A problem that the soldiers encountered was the fact that they were lied too. The Government lied to Canadians to get them to sign up as soldiers in the war. The Government promised to do many things for the soldiers, like secure him with a job after the war, if he can no longer work in his previous position they will retrain him for a new position for free, him and his family will also be paid during and after a month of his training, and finally they would pay for treatment. Of course the Government was not telling the truth and only said that so people would join the army. Instead of that happening, soldiers went unemployed and struggled with financial issues. Another huge problem that impacted majority of the Canadians, which was the Spanish influenza epidemic. This illness spread to Canada because the returning soldiers were infected and brought the virus back with them. This illness greatly impacted Canada by killing about 50,000 Canadians. The total amount of Canadians that died due to the illness and war was about 110,000 people. This had an economic impact on the country, which left families without a primary wage earner and orphaned thousands of children. Finally, almost ever soldier that returned from war had a limb missing. There was so many soldiers with missing limbs that an Amputation Club was made. The loss of limbs had got so bad that a club had to be made for them. This also shows that majority of the soldiers in that club was unemployed and was probably struggling with financial issues. If there was no war 110,000 Canadians would not of died, the soldiers would be employed, and there would be less financial issues.
