How did WW1 impact Canadian identity?
Although the war did help shape Canada's identity, it still had a very negative impact on Canadians. For example, World War 1 killed many Canadians. The war killed more then 60, 000 Canadians and when the soldiers returned, they brought back the Spanish influenza epidemic which killed about 50, 000 Canadians. In total over 110, 000 Canadians died, those deaths could of been avoidable if the war did not take place. World War 1 has also caused many job conflicts for both men and women. When the soldiers came back from war there was no jobs for them so they were unemployed. The women had to take over the men's jobs during war, but they were treated very unfair. They were forced to work long hours and get very little pay. The war also caused prohibition, which caused bootleggers to sell alcohol illegally and it also made people turn to drugs in a replacement for alcohol. Finally , it caused the conscripted crisis which caused the French to go against the English. This created many problems and a riot. Some might think the Canadian identity is very important because it is was built Canada, but if you look at all the negative affects of the war and how if the war did not happen, we would not of had those problems.
